Douggie’s Going Deep… In 2008!

Apparently Tim Wakefield is $555,000 better when Doug Mirabelli is the catcher. And I, for one, am glad. Yes, Doug Mirabelli hit .202 last year getting just 23 total hits. But 5 of those hits were home runs! Thats 22%. David Ortiz hits a home run in just under 20% of his hits by comparison.

Plus, if you aren’t going to bring him back, who is going to be the back up catcher? I don’t think they want to be trading away any more (Cla Meredith) pitching prospects for back up catchers! I suppose that they are hoping George Kottaras (the guy got for David Wells) since he essentially served as a replacement for Josh Bard, who is playing quite well over in San Diego. (Too bad he couldn’t catch a knuckle ball) But so far, the offense is still leaving something to be desired since he hit a whopping .241 in AAA last year.

It seems that we are probably going to be seeing good old number 28, up at bat with his batting gloves in his pocket until Tim Wakefield is gone as well. Personally, I am glad to hear it. I love Douggie, and I predict we’ll be seeing him go deep at least half a dozen times next year! As far as I can tell, he is a fan favorite.

Though his game worn jersey didn’t generate all that much interest in a recent auction, pulling in 0 bids. Was there a mustard stain on the front or something?

But even if his jersey isn’t worth $350, I still say keeping him around for another year is worth half a million… of someone else’s money.

Stumble it!
