The Santana Sweepstakes

I typically like to take a Wait and See attitude with off season trades. But this is just too good! With the Sox and Twins exchanging medical records of Jon Lester, and then going into silent mode, its looking pretty probable that Santana comes here. Especially with the soon-to-be-hated Hank Steinbrenner’s deadline of midnight last night passing, I’m liking what I’m hearing.

Will the Sox have to give up too much to get him? I say no. Its looking like minor leaguers, Coco Crisp, who has been a failure in everything except dramatic catches (Jacoby should be able to fill that void nicely) and Lester, who still can’t throw strikes.

This is a deal that is almost too good to be true! OK, yes, one of those prospects may turn out to be a great major leaguer one day, but come on, this is Johan Santana we’re talking about. He’s a perennial Cy Young candidate - something that will almost definitely not be said about anyone that the Twins are getting.

My only real question is why would the Twins trade him now? Are they even going to try to win this year? Won’t teams be more desperate in July for a great pitcher? I am under the impression that Francisco Liriano is coming back for them which gives them a great 1-2 punch in pitching, and that can make any team a contender.

But whatever, if Santana is going to come to Boston, let’s get him here. We would have probably one of the greatest pitching staff’s ever assembled. Its almost too much to think about… This is getting Randy Moss for a 4th round draft pick all over again. Its getting Kevin Garnett for a minivan full of 22 year old prospects. It would be like getting… well, like getting the best player available while giving up next to nothing!

Let’s go Sox - I’m ready to ask Santa for a Santana jersey. Let’s just hope is Johan, and not Carlos…

Stumble it!
