7th Inning Curtain Calls are LAME
Yes Johnny Damon, this means you.
Whatever happened to the “classy Yankees?” Is getting out of the dugout and waving to the crowd after a 314 foot home run in the 7TH INNING really a cause for a dramatic curtain call? NO! There is no excuse for it. Your home run did give your team the lead, but you do not need to be waving around like an idiot while someone else is at bat. There is simply no excuse for this type of behavior. If the game were reversed, and say, Coco Crisp hit a go-ahead home run in Fenway Park against the Yankees, there is no way that coming out of the dugout and waving like a moron to the crowd would even cross his mind. This reminds me of when Bernie Williams hit a solo home run in the second inning last year at a game in Yankee Stadium and came out for a curtain call. I’m pretty sure that during that game, 3 Yankees waved at the crowd like Miss South Carolina in the Teen USA Pageant.
There are very few situations when a curtain call is appropriate:
- When your home run actually wins the game. This means when it wins immediately, as in its the 9th inning or later. Walk Off Style.
- When it is a record-breaking situation, for example, when David Ortiz hit #51 last year breaking the Sox record.
- When it is your last home game/regular season game/at bat. It is appropriate to wave to the crowd when you won’t be seeing them again, but not when its in between taking your batting helmet off and putting your glove on
So there you have it Johnny Damon, you didn’t fall in any of these three categories. So next time you hit a home run (which will be what, late September at the rate you hit them?) that would be either a foul ball or an out in 27 out of the 30 ballparks, don’t jump out of the dugout and wave to the crowd like a teenager from South Carolina. Instead, be happy you are doing your job as a left fielder (even though you’re getting $12 million to be a center fielder) and just sit down and contemplate the fact that even after last night, you are not playing for a playoff team right now.

From today’s NY Post:
“It’s taken a number of players to replace me,” Damon said of the Red Sox. “I’m Johnny [Bleeping] Damon.”
Talking in 3rd person is pretty lame too.
