Wily Mo Deal is now Finalized

Today, the Nationals traded Emiliano Fruto, also known as some crappy relief pitcher from Colombia, to the Diamondbacks for Chris Carter who is then flipped to us to finish off the deal.

This is somewhat surprising, given that the players to be named later are often times named much, much later. But the Red Sox are in need of first basemen and word has it that this guys is a prospect ready for the big leagues. In AAA this year, he’s hit 18 home runs, driven in 84 RBIs and is currently hitting .324. He will turn 26 in two weeks and is left handed.

I’m not jumping to any conclusions here, but if they are trading a major leaguer in Pena (2 home runs with the Nats already!) and forcing the Nationals to make a move in order to get this guy, they may be thinking about using him in the big league club next year. Of course, Carter still has a lot to prove, but its not out of the question that this is in anticipation of letting Mike Lowell walk next year and moving Youkilis back over to third. During a chat session today, Epstein noted that “We’re not necessarily in a rush to move him off of first, but his ability to play either corner certainly comes in handy.” I’m thinking Mike Lowell’s days may be numbered in Boston. I’m going to blame the JD Drew contract if they do in fact let Lowell walk. I’d rather have Ellsbury and Lowell than Drew and 1B to be named later.

Stumble it!
