An Apology From the Orioles

Well, we at Red Sox Superfan.com weren’t the only ones horrified to hear that the Orioles announcers were calling Fenway a toilet. An anonymous fan brought it to my attention that he in fact went one step further and sent a complaint to the Orioles directly. Luckily for them, they apologized so we won’t have to chastise them all that much more on this web site. You’ll find the full unabridged email below, along with their response (names removed of course).

I would like to register a complaint against your radio announcers. During the game on Sunday, the classy announcers were talking about an article in the Boston papers about the amount of Red Sox fans in attendance at Camden Yards for the weekends games. Supposedly in the article one of the players made a statement that it felt like Camden Yards became Fenway South. The high class Oriole announcers said, “That is an insult to Camden Yards since Fenway is a toilet.” That is showing real class. Did they miss the point of the article? Do you think that the fans this weekend came to see the Orioles. I bet the Orioles organization gladly pocketed the money that came in from those fans that usually attend games at the “toilet known as Fenway Park.” I have been a life long Red Sox fan and have ALWAYS admired the Orioles organization and the good old days of Palmer, Bumbry, Singleton, Murray, Boddicker, Dempsey, etc.. One of my fondest memories in baseball was attending Camden Yards to see the Sox play the first year that Camden opened. A very beautiful ballpark (including a stop at Boog’s). I always said that the Orioles showed that an old time park could still be built and that the Sox owners should look at how that field was built. No longer will I ever think that. Give me the “toilet’ known as Fenway. Your announcers insulted me and the fans of Boston. Last time it was the TV announcers talking about Schilling. Now the radio jockeys bashing Fenway. What next? Where is the class?

And their response:

Dear Anonymous

Thank you for taking the time to contact the Orioles.

I did not personally hear the statement you heard on the radio on Sunday. We are looking into the situation, but I want to certainly apologize on behalf of Joe Angel and the entire organization for his inappropriate comment regarding Fenway Park. Mr. Angel’s attempt at humor clearly crossed the line, though I am confident that no ill will was intended. However, the comment should never have been made. The Orioles organization believes strongly that Fenway Park is without a doubt one of the jewels of baseball, and Mr. Angel’s offhand comment is certainly not shared by anyone within the organization.

Again, I sincerely apologize and thank you for calling this to our attention.

Sincerely,

Anonymous
