Brandon Moss - Welcome to the Show

23 year old Brandon Moss will be sitting in the Boston Red Sox dugout for the firs time tonight. No promises that he will play, but with Eric Hinske away from the team with both a death and life in the family (his grandmother died but his child is about to be born) they need someone to fill the roster spot for a few days. They were actually without their extra player in yesterday’s game.

The fact that they brought up Moss, an outfielder, shows just how little confidence they still have in Wily Mo Pena. It would have been a lot smarter to bring someone up who could play first base as far as I can tell, with Youk being the only 1B on the team right now (I guess Ortiz is your backup). This also means that Wily Mo is essentially a waste of space 5th outfielder. September first can’t come fast enough!

But anyway, about Brandon: He is 23, but will be 24 in about 5 weeks. He provides a left handed bat off the bench (though he throws right) to replace Hinske in that regard. He was drafted in the 8th round in 2002 by the Red Sox and has been moving his way up through the system. He was an All-Star this year in the International League (with Pawtucket). He won’t kill the ball and we won’t see a lot of home runs, at least at first, but he can hit to all fields and has a fundamentally sound swing.
