Barry Big Head Can’t Help the Giants Avoid the Sweep
Not even Barry Bonds’ gigantic head and home run off of Tim Wakefield could lift the Giants over the Sox. Wakefield finally got a good amount of run support from the Red Sox in order to beat Matt Morris on Father’s Day. This, of course, completed the sweep of the lowly Giants who now stand at 30-38 (hey, its still more wins than the Orioles!).
Inter-league play continues today with the Sox facing Atlanta for the second time this year, this time down south. It is the start of the road trip that will cover the most miles on the season. They travel about 1,000 miles from Boston to Atlanta for 3 games, then jump on a plane to San Diego and travel another 2,000 miles to play the weekend series (3,000 and counting). From San Diego (the ballpark furthest from Fenway of all those in the majors) they fly north to Seattle which is another 1,200 miles away (4,200 and counting). After Seattle, they fly home to Boston in order to face the Rangers for July 4 weekend which tacks on another 3,000 miles. So by the time the Red Sox arrive in Boston after this road trip, they will have traveled 7,200 miles in 11 days. At least they have 2 Thursdays off in a row, but still, its a long trip.
Next time you are complaining about your commute to work, think of the Sox! With around 60 or so people traveling with the team (including coaches, trainers, announcers, staff and guests) that is just over 400,000 frequent flyer miles for the team.
