Throw it Back=Thrown Out?
I was at the Sox game last night and saw something that kind of got me fired up.
I was in the bleachers last night and after Brad Hawpe took Schilling deep, a “lucky” Sox fan was able to get a hold of the ball. The crowd chanted to the fan to throw it back and he held it up and like a good fan, he chucked it back onto the field (and not at a player or security person or during play, totally done in good taste). The crowd cheered. That’s tough for the guy because it’s a awesome souvenir and something to remember forever (although it’s a Rockies’ HR ball, I wouldn’t hate on the guy if he didn’t. Its not a Yankees’ ball, or a Barry Bonds HR ball - although that would be awesome if someone threw one of those back!).
So then security walks up to the guy and then proceeds to escort the guy out for throwing objects on the field! Everyone was booing. What kind of bullshit is that? Throwing the ball back when the opposing team hits a HR is, like, a baseball tradition. If you DON’T do it at Wrigley and you are wearing Cubs stuff, your considered a traitor and probably will get shit throw at you as well as being called gay. Am I crazy or is that too strict an interpretation of the “rules at Fenway”?
Fenway park is going to charge you $45 for an obstructed view behind a steel beam in an undersized seat, but you can’t have a little fun practicing a baseball tradition that has gone on since the 1930’s while you’re there?
It is stuff like this that irks me about the new people who run the Sox (ie Lucchino) at times.
Friendly Fenway my ass, more like the “Communist Republic of Fenway”.
