Now Batting 9th, Julio Lugo
In the first game of the Red Sox home stand tonight, Dustin Pedroia and Julio Lugo swapped spots in the lineup. That’s right, Pedroia led off the game and Lugo is slated in the 9 hole. Its about time! Your leadoff hitter should be the guy who is getting on base the best (see Youkilis last year) and not the guy you thought would be back in April.
I still like Lugo for some reason even though he is slumping. I believe the great hitter we saw in Tampa Bay is still there inside him somewhere. Hopefully hitting 9th will allow him to get more aggressive. His career numbers do show him hitting best in the lead-off, but something just isn’t working right now. Hitting at the bottom of the lineup will hopefully get him swinging on some first pitch fastballs that he can hit as line drives, rather than the lame grounders we’ve been seeing later in the count.
Let’s hope it does the trick, because like it or night, Julio Lugo is a major part of this team that needs to perform.

Speed in Coco and Lugo a the bottom of the order might help, but they have to climb out of that .200 region. When the hitting improves, even if it only improves to “average,” watch out AL!
