Tim Wakefield’s Contract
The Red Sox have pretty much the sweetest deal one could imagine with Tim Wakefield and his current contract situation. Basically, it breaks down like this:
Wakefield is going to finish his career in Boston. He has a one year contract with a club option for another year, renewing indefinitely. This means that they have the rights to him and can sign him for $4.6 million every year from now to eternity. If they decide not to sign him, he’ll become a free agent, but probably would just retire.
It’s pretty amazing in today’s day of players unions and long term contracts and opt-out clauses.
The Red Sox will keep giving Wakefield just under $5 million per year until they decide he isn’t worth it anymore. Personally, assuming he does finish here, shouldn’t Wake be a candidate for having his number retired? He may not be the greatest pitcher we’ve had, but he’s pitched in the most games in a Sox uniform!

I do believe that one of the criteria for a Red Sox player to have his number retired is election to the Baseball Hall of Fame. As good as Wakefield has been for us over the years (on and off the field), I don’t think that he is going to be a hall of famer.

I say yes, and screw the Sox hall requirements….it should be changed.
His number should be up there when it is said and done, along with Pesky.
I bet he ends up being a bullpen coach and maybe more for the Sox when he is done pitching.
