Extending the Lead
If the Sox can take 2 of 3 against the Yankees this week, perhaps then, we can start talking about the division being a true runaway.

To get to 90 wins, the Yankees now need to go 72-48 for the rest of the season. That’s a .600 clip, about what a 97-win team would produce over a full season.
That would put them at 90 wins, but really, they are going to need more like 93-95 to make the playoffs (wild card or otherwise). This means, that, realistically, the Yankees need to go 77-43 from here on out. That is a .658 win percentage. Do you know how many teams have at least a .658 winning percentage right now? Exactly 1, the team they are chasing, the Red Sox (.698).
The Yankees essentially have to be the second best team in baseball for the rest of the season, and that is very unlikely to happen.

They are done, its over. Why aren’t we talking about Toronto as a potential come back team? They have about the same record and were supposed to be a top contending team to start the year. Its a very similar story up there (injuries, etc).
