As it stands right now, the Red Sox are far and away the best team in baseball. They are kicking ass now and taking names later. Most of the games they lose (like last night) are the result of impressive starting pitching by the other team. When the pitching is more or less equal, we are winning every time. The Sox are blowing hardly any leads and teaching their opponents how important a solid bullpen is day in and day out.

All this, and we’re still complaining that our lead-off hitter isn’t hitting enough, Manny hasn’t warmed up yet, Coco is useless, Varitek is a washed-up rally killer, and JD Drew is a huge rip off. Most will point to pitching as the reason for winning. While they wouldn’t be winning without great pitching, the offensive stats are just as impressive as the defense. Let’s look at some key, and VERY impressive, stats on this year’s team, through May 15.

• The most runs scored at 207 (Detroit is right there with 206)
• The fewest runs allowed, at only 133 (Oakland has given up 135 for a close second)
• The most road victories, at 14 (tied with the Mets and Tigers)
• The most total wins with 26
• The highest winning percentage
• The largest divisional lead, by a wide margin (8 games ahead where Milwaukee is 5.5 ahead)
• 4th in batting average against
• 3rd in team ERA
• The highest on base percentage
• 2nd in team batting average
• 4th in slugging percentage
• The highest OPS (On base plus slugging)
• 9th in home runs, which makes the SLG/OPS numbers even more amazing
• The most runs scored
