I Won’t Say I Told You So

Kate with the Red Sox trophy!

But I am thinking it. I am excited about Roger Clemens going to the Yankees. I may even be ecstatic. This fun development means it is now again socially acceptable for a Sox fan to thoroughly dislike him. This is a wonderful thing, and very convenient for me.

So, $28 million, huh? In my opinion, this salary is further proof that Roger is a high-maintenance whiner. The Yanks originally offered a slightly lower figure, but Clemens countered with $28,000,022. First off, adding the $22 is just ridiculous. Is he a 12-year-old little leaguer with a lucky number? Second, it is clearly not coincidental that it is $1 million more than A-Rods annual salary this year. The one-upmanship of a future teammate is pathetic (and greedy).

If the Sox had paid him anywhere near that, I would have been livid. Even more bothersome is his “family clause”. To give any single player the royal treatment is counter-intuitive. One of the biggest reasons the Yanks are crap this year is because they’re not a team. They can’t “gel” a bunch of overpaid, over hyped stars. Adding a guy who only travels when in the rotation, gets preferential treatment, and only cares about every fifth game is not going to improve that situation.

While I would never boo Clemens, I do think he is overrated, and he is clearly not what the Yankees need. The Yanks, first of all, need a team that can make the postseason. With or without Clemens, they don’t have it. Even if he can pitch well in the AL (which is doubtful, in my opinion), it is ridiculous to have an ace every 5 games and then march out a rotating group of single A newbies and an overworked and mediocre bullpen and expect to win much of anything. And the postseason? Can anyone remember a “clutch” Clemens performance in the postseason? Bloody sock he hath not.

I truly look forward to June 1.

On a slightly related note, if anyone knows of any part-time summer gig that pays $888,000 for each time I show up, I will gladly consider it.

Stumble it!
