My Lucky Jersey

Kate and the Red Sox Trophy

My lucky jersey, my only jersey, is a No. 7. It’s red (I’m sure you already knew it wasn’t pink); a birthday gift from a few years ago. I wear it to every game I attend, and it has an amazing record of success. I wore it July 24, 2004 (Varitek and A-Rod and a Billy Mueller walk-off). I wore it to Yankees stadium when Arroyo was heckled by Yankees fans asking “who are you?” which he responded to by shutting down their precious team. The Sox have won almost EVERY game I’ve worn it to. I have NEVER washed it, and it will stay that way.

This off season, when I realized who was taking over No. 7, I had a crisis of conscience. Do I continue to wear it and call it a “Trot Nixon throw back jersey”? Do I get a new one and retire the lucky jersey? If I got a new jersey, whose number would I wear?

So far, it’s looking like I can keep it, and to be honest, I’m surprised. Very pleasantly suprised. I was skeptical of J.D. Drew to a fault. I listened when I read and heard he wasn’t a hard worker. I was sad at the thought of No. 7 being someone who wasn’t passionate about the game. Maybe I’m just one of a legion of overly skeptical Red Sox fans who listens to the press too much and doesn’t trust management enough. It’s too early in the season to say anything for sure, but I’ll gladly take a .393 BA, .419 OBP, .571 slugging, with 1 HR and 5 RBIs after 8 games. Not too shabby, J.D.

Stumble it!
