Your First Place Boston Red Sox

Bases loaded, down by 1. Bottom of the 8th. ARod up to bat. Here’s his chance to win the game. A hit here and he earns his contract, and the Yankees take the lead. Mariano Rivera is warming up in the bullpen. “The Red Sox won today,” he thinks to himself. “I better get the job done.”

What happened next reminds me of a joke my friend Sean once told me. Why doesn’t anyone visit ARod’s web site anymore? Too many pop-ups! That’s right, with the game on the line, he popped it up, harmlessly to second base.

And like that, the Red Sox are sitting on top of the American League East. Let’s hope they stay there. They are in Texas tonight, with Tim Wakefield pitching. This always makes me a little nervous. He’s consistent, but there isn’t much of a chance of winning 1-0 or 2-1. The offense better keep it going. That shouldn’t be too difficult though, considering Texas is sending Robinson Tejada to the mound. Who? Exactly. This 25-year-old Dominican made 16 starts last year and posted a mildly respectable 4.28 ERA, though had just 40 strikeouts in 74 innings pitched. He is primarily a fly ball pitcher, and hopefully Manny and Ortiz (do we have to include JD Drew now too?) can push some of those fly balls out of the park. I’m thinking the first back-to-back is coming off Mr. Tejada tonight. If so, I’m confident we’ll stay in first place since the Yankees pitching is apparently awful.

But of course, its still very early in the season and who knows what will end up happening. For now, I’m happy the offense seems to be clicking, the pitching is on par, and only 4 more days until I’ll be sitting in Fenway. Go Sox!

Stumble it!
