Ugueth Urbina Buys Soap on a Rope
Former Red Sox (star?) reliever Ugueth Urbina was sentenced to 14 years in prison for having the hardest first name to spell in baseball.
OK, not really.
But he is going to jail for a very long time - 14 years in a Socialist Venezuelan prison equates to about 674 years in a ‘normal’ jail.
In case you don’t know, he was convicted of the following:
- 5 attempted murders
- illegal deprivation of liberty
- violating a prohibition against taking justice into his own hands
Now that’s something, considering this is in VENEZUELA! President Chavez was a close ally of Fidel Castro and has been known to incorporate some ‘interesting’ tactics in keeping himself in power. But I digress. Either way, he dumped gasoline on some workers at his ranch following an attack with a machete. What a nut!
He is going to jail as a rich man after having played pro ball here in the States. He was traded for by the Red Sox at the trading deadline in 2001 for Tomo Ohka and Rich Rundles. We let him go after the 2002 season (and went with the failed closer by committee before trading for BK Kim - mistake?) and he signed with Texas.
This at least answers one question - a crazy, wild and aggressive attitude has been known to make up a good closer. Now we just have to make sure Papelbon doesn’t have any machetes in his house.
