Top 5 Matsuzaka Adjustments

Here is my list of five differences between Japanese baseball and the major leagues. In other words, the top 5 adjustments Daisuke will have to make while pitching here.

  • 5 man rotation. Japanese professional baseball uses a 6-man rotation, so Daisuke will have to start more often while on the Red Sox.
  • Longer schedules. Not only will he start more often, he will have to make more total starts. The Nippon League plays 140 games, with a shorter playoffs, and 3 all star games.
  • Non-Japanese players with extreme personalities. Japanese baseball players play for honor, Americans play for money and fame. It’s a major difference. Japanese players tend to be much more fundamental and hit with much less power.
  • No ties. Yes, Japanese baseball games can end in ties.
