The Carlton Fisk Free Agency Story
I’ve heard many versions of this, but here is what I believe really went down.
On February 12, 1981, Fisk was officially declared a free agent. The Red Sox claimed he was under contract through the upcoming 1981 season since his contract had a team option. Instead, Fisk won the case under arbitrator Raymond Goetz, with the assistance of Marvin Miller and the MLB Player’s Association. In the end, becuase the Red Sox mailed him his contract on December 22 instead of December 20, their option did not technically exercise and Fisk was eligible to sign with any team he pleases. That was with the White Sox, on March 9.
