The Day the 2006 Season Actually Ended
The title of this alone should tell you that I am referring to Monday, August 21. After watching my beloved team drop 4 games in 3 days to the dreaded New York Yankees (which is an entirely different story), I found myself sitting in the kitchen waiting to head down to Fenway Park for what we all hoped would be a redemption game where we at least avoid the sweep. I thought, hey, David Wells is back, and I have been saying all year that he is going to be our savior and win 4 games in September, leading us through our late season playoff push. And here we are at the end of August, and he’s ready to do just that. Then, I flipped on the TV. Sure enough, it was 11:15 and the guy who replaced Rod Roddy on the Price is Right was yelling come on down! But what’s this? This guy (in California no less) he just called is wearing a Yankees hat! Thanks God, thank you for torturing me. I have to look at smiling Yankee fans before I even get to the park. Then Bob announces the prize they will all be bidding on. An electric BROOM? You have to be kidding me. Do I even have to finish this story now, or can you see where its going?
Captain Yankees hat won the broom, and I shut off the TV in disgust, drove down to Fenway, and watched David Wells pitch a gem into the 8th inning, only to get no run support and lose the game to the late Cory Lidle. But of course, I knew we had no chance that day, because I was watching the local CBS affiliate at 11:15 that morning. The price was right for the New York fans that day, and they all left with brooms in hand, just like Mr. California Yankee fan. The season was over, and I had seen it coming just hours before the game. Literally.
